George Coombs

George Coombs is a local sheep rancher who grew up in Wayne County. A popular Saturday Sunset Series speaker, George always draws a crowd. An enthusiastic  local resident was overhead saying that she’d come to hear George read the phone book.

In the outdoor evening program, the long-time resident and sheep ranchers told of his family’s 90 years and his own 63 years in the sheep business. George knows sheep ranching as a vital industry – clothing troops in the wars and financially supporting many Wayne County families. Coombs knows “what it used to be like on the ranges” and how the sheep business came about and where it was gone.
