Steve Allen, author of the popular Canyoneering series of hiking guides to southern Utah, has been exploring canyon country for more than forty years. He is a historian, backcountry guide, and river runner.
Steve spent fifteen years documenting the stories of thousands of place names in his new two-volume history, Utah’s Canyon Country Place Names. There are also stories and early descriptions about those places, often told by the first explorers or the early pioneers who settled there. The locations and history behind hundreds of historic roads, trails, railroads, and highways, as well as major cowboy line camps, towns that have disappeared, and water sources used by the earliest settlers are documented. Taken in aggregate, the information in these two volumes literally tells the story of the exploration and settlement of southern Utah.
Steve will share his insights and experiences at the Saturday Sunset Series event on September 28, 2013.
